CHINANEWS (Picture and text by Zhong Lei from Academy of General Studies) The organizing committee of CUMCM released the winners of 2021 China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling in the past few days. We dispatched 15 teams to take part in the contest and harvested one first prize and two second prizes at state level, three first prizes, one second prize and four third prizes at provincial level. We ranked first in winning the prize at the national level among junior colleges of Guangxi. With excellent performance and organization management, our university was awarded as “Excellent School for Outstanding Organization”. Teacher Wei Bipeng won the title of “Excellent Instructor” both at state level and Guangxi area, and teacher Zhong Lei won the title of “Excellent Instructor” at Guangxi area.

Founded in 1992 and sponsored by China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM), the annual China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling is one of largest extracurricular scientific and technological activities for college students in China and one of the first 19 contests listed in “Top Recognized National College Activities”. The contest is designed to stimulate students’ enthusiasm in learning mathematics and improve their comprehensive ability to build mathematical models and use computer technology to solve practical problems. It has become popular among colleges and students all over the country.

Liuzhou Vocational & Technical College has been taking active in preparation for 2021 6th School Mathematical Contest in Modeling since March to achieve outstanding results in the national contest and cultivate students’ sense of innovation and team spirit. The contest attracted 183 students from 7 academies of the college. Under the special guidance and training in forms of pre-match off-line elective course and lectures by the instructor from senior vocational math team of the Academy of General Studies, the contest was successfully completed with 45 students standing out, who were arranged to form 15 teams to participate in the national contest on behalf of the college.

The CUMCM was held from 18:00, September 9 to 20:00, September 12. Given epidemic prevention and control measures inplace, the Academy of General Studies designated an experienced teacher to conduct 7-day online special courses and 12-day offline guidance & systematic training for the candidate students in summer vacation, from modeling methods, software operation, paper writing, format to precautions. Candidates sharpened their modeling ability and level and obtained excellent performance in the national contest, which highlights the effectiveness of our higher mathematics teaching on students’ ability to solve practical problems.
